Lymphoedema is a swelling of soft tissue as a result of the accumulation initially of protein rich fluid in the extracellular spaces. If untreated, this is eventually replaced by fibrous tissue.

Lymphoedema Management Therapy is a team approach by physiotherapists Robyn Heddle and Ann Thelander and you, for the optimal control of your Lymphoedema.

Our is aim is for a total quality outcome adding a new zest to your life!

The benefits of Complex Physical Therapy and Laser Therapy:

• Safe, non-invasive treatment
• Increased self esteem
• Improved mobility and comfort
• The ability to self manage your limbs through our own educational program

There are a number of types of Lymphoedema:

Rollover to see the Before and AfterPrimary Lymphoedema occurs without any known precipitating cause and is due to inadequate or non-functional lymphatic vessels which reduces the ability of the lymphatic system to carry fluid load from the tissues. The most common causes are surgery involving the lymph nodes, radiation therapy, vascular diseases and trauma. It is most often seen following surgery for cancer of the breast, pelvic area and resection for lymphomas and melanomas.

Symptoms of Lymphoedema
As Lymphoedema progresses the involved areas swell more. Mobility can be severely impaired with the skin over the area involved becoming taut and dry.

Laser Therapy
The laser used produces light energy at two particular wavelengths. This light penetrates the tissues to 3½ centimetres and is absorbed by the cells. This light has a stimulating effect on the tissues.

Laser Therapy (using a scanning laser) helps Lymphoedema by:

• Softening scar tissue
• Softening hardened fibrosed areas
• Stimulating the lymph vessels to pump faster
• Stimulating the growth of new lymph vessels and thereby increasing the drainage of the limb
• Reducing pain
